About SEDS
The SEDS-EARTH community has listed SEDS-VIT as the only active and flourishing student chapter in the whole of the country. The Google search engine (www.google.com) has listed our SEDS-VIT website in its search-result. This shows that the website is active and buzzing with activity. Almost all of our events are open to members and non-members alike. All our presentations are targeted at the common sudent and do not require any background in the subject. All these achivements have been realized in a time span of less than a year. And final saving the best for last, SEDS-VIT is hosting the SEDS-EARTH International Conference here in VIT campus.
FOUNDATION OF SEDS :
Students for the Exploration and Development of Space was founded in 1980 at MIT and Princeton and consists of an international group of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from all disciplines. SEDS is a chapter based organization with chapters throughout the United States , Canada, United Kingdom, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The permanent National Headquarters for SEDS-USA resides at MIT.
HOW DOES SEDS HELP ?
SEDS provides an excellent environment in which to obtain access to many sources of information including speakers, tours, films, discussion group, daily NASA updates and astronomical observing trips and tours of local space facilities. Students at several chapters have played major roles in organizing large conferences and have established important contacts with members of the space community, helped increase public awareness of the benefits of space exploration by offering presentations to local primary and secondary schools as well as universities. All chapters keep in contact with each other through on-line computer networks

About
SEDS-VIT
SEDS-VIT was inaugrated on 8th march 2006. Within one year of its starting, It has made tremendous progress. With a total of around 200 members along with a dedicated working committee and supporting advisory board,SEDS-VIT has organised numerous events to develop interest amongst its members in all fields of space sciences. Video presentations of theories for better understanding,giving the latest information on the happenings in the field of astronomy and aerospace,tours to observatories to understand the night sky better. All our presentations are targeted at the common student and do not require any background in the subject.All these achievements have been made in a span of less than one year. Due to this active role of SEDS-VIT, this chapter has been chosen as the Headquarter of SEDS-India.
About VIT
Historic Town
of Vellore
The historic town of Vellore in India’s southernmost state,
Tamil Nadu, has long been known for its magnificent fort and
ancient temple, renowned hospital and medical college, Parry’s
factories and the vast industrial estate in nearby Ranipet. A
new landmark is the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), known
for its international standard of technical education and
research facilities.
The Institute
Mr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the
Government of Tamil Nadu promoted this institute as Vellore
Engineering College in the year 1984 under the auspicious of the
North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust. The Vellore
Engineering College was then affiliated to Madras University and
offered three undergraduate engineering courses namely Civil,
Mechanical and Electronics and Communication. The constant
support and effort by the Management, Faculty, Students, and
Parents led the college to grow in both quantitatively and
qualitatively. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE),
Government of India, has ensured accreditation of all the
courses offered at the college by the National Board of
Accreditation (NBA), Government of India. The exceptional
standards maintained at the college enabled to fetch "A" grade
for all the courses.
As early as in 1999, Vellore Engineering College was awarded the
ISO 9002 certificate for three years by the Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
of the Netherlands. It was the first educational institute in
India to achieve this recognition.
The academic excellence, visionary management, exceptional
faculty, disciplined students, and highly performing alumni made
it possible to get "Deemed University" status by the Ministry of
Human Resources Development, Government of India, in June 2001.
The founder Mr. G. Viswanathan has become the Chancellor. The
Deemed University status enabled the institute to have academic
freedom and hence the quality of the programme has increased
dramatically making us to grow in size also.
Vellore Institute of Technology today profoundly known as VIT,
comprises seven schools offering 17 undergraduate programmes and
28 post graduate programmes. It also offers research programmes
leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. Of the 10, 000 students
studying in the institute, nearly one fourth of them are women.
Nearly 400 fulltime faculty members and about 600 administrative
and supporting staff facilitates the students to become not only
professional but also employable thereby contributing wealth to
the nation. The international linkages established by the
institute helps the students to get global education and
training locally and if needed globally also.
The campus spread over 250 acres is located on the Ranipet -
Katpadi Road at Vellore, a district headquarters town between
the two important cities of Chennai (formerly Madras) and
Bangalore (known as the Silicon Valley of the South Asia). Well
furnished hostels accommodate two third of the student
population. The strategic location of the institute adds value
to the education by constant interaction with near by
industries.
